The Ardilaun Hotel, hotel in Galway

Ideally located amongst spacious private grounds, this luxury 4-star hotel boasts a superb location in the leafy suburb of Taylors Hill, 1km from Galway city centre.

Prompted by this form to start with my thoughts about breakfast - it was good with a wide range of delicious food on offer but, in respect of communications, there were improvements to be made. Travelling alone, on my first morning I was told I could not sit by the windows because I was on my own and the tables with the nice garden view were for couples or family groups... In addition, I was told breakfast was served until 10.30am but really, it was encouraged to be there and eating before 10.30 (so, my first day's breakfast was greatly rushed to fit in eating it in time, myself having gone for a swim first). Whatever, breakfast is not where I would start my review. I am asked if it met my expectations? Eventually it did. The staff did all they could to make my stay comfortable but I booked because of a sea view - which was not there... I also booked to be in a quiet place and the first night there were loud guests downstairs partying. The hotel staff moved me so 10/10 for that but I was very tired and so the delay to get comfortable and to sleep was upsetting. I absolutely think staff did their best and was impressed by them but the communication at booking stage could have been improved.

FAQs about hotels in Galway

Cracking City of Craic

Welcoming Galway is a small city with fantastic nightlife and an infectious atmosphere. Outside of the Galway Arts Festival, there’s still plenty of live music in the Irish pubs to get the party started.

The Galway Races at Ballybrit Race Course west of Galway Airport attract a good crowd, as does Eyre Square, a green space with flags of previous ruling families who gave it its nickname - City of Tribes. To the south are cobbled streets housing brightly coloured shops and restaurants.

Sights in Galway include its cathedral and city museum which offers an interesting insight into the history of the city and Ireland. Lynch’s Castle is the last remaining 17th-century merchant house, and the Spanish Arch is a small section of city walls by the Corrib River, linking Galway Bay to huge Loch Corrib. Where river and ocean meet is Claddagh Park, a great spot for a picnic with a view.

Further around the coast is Salthill Promenade, home to Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s national aquarium, focussing on sealife off Irish shores. It’s a Christmas Day tradition to jump from Blackrock Diving Tower nearby into the icy Atlantic Ocean, though you may well spot some wag giving it a go.

Booking.com has an excellent range of Galway hotels, apartments and B&Bs to complete your stay.

We prefered to eat and drink in the West End and stayed clear of Shop Street other than when we hit the artists market where we could get locally made stuff. We had great food at Universal and grabbed drinks at the Bierhaus. We listened to fabulous music at the Crane- go for the experience (go upstairs) if nothing else! If you want to go to the Aran Islands, I recommend the Aran Island Ferries. They leave right from Galway Docks and take you to Inishmore. You get about 4 hours on the island (enough to take a horse and cart (a must!) to Dun Aonghasa and back but not much else) then it picks you up and returns via the Cliffs of Mohr. If you want longer or want a different island you'll have to go to one of the other ports (Doolin or Rossaveel) that will take you a while to get to. The weather was incredible, so we were outside the whole time and walked on the promendade to Salthill each night. We didn't have a car- the traffic was pretty heavy, so I was very glad we were on foot. If you do have a car, I would recommend parking at wherever you are staying and walking everywhere else if possible. If we had more time we would have ventured to Spiddal and to Connemara National Park, but we felt we had enough time to see Galway itself.

Galway is a beautiful town with many, many things to see and do. There seemed to be a lot more young people (teens, early-twenties) out and about in Galway than we noticed in our other destinations. The streets and pubs of the Latin Quarter were crowded on a Monday, which is great but surprising! The area we visited was very walkable with lots of shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities. It's easy to get lost/turned around here, but everyone is helpful in pointing you in the right direction.

Heard for many years that Galway is a beautiful romantic place and always wanted to go there. Now I've been, and I won't be going back. Average looking place, nothing to really do, everything is very expensive and overpriced, especially the food. Some of the buildings are kinda cool, but the famous landmark road with the painted houses is literally 3 houses painted a colour and you will need to photoshop a bit of contrast to your photo afterwards!

The hotel exceeded expectations. The room size was very decent (there are a lot of reviews that it's small, but maybe we just got lucky with the room). Room and hotel itself clean and cozy. Location can't be better - in the heart of an old city center, close to nice restaurants, pubs and historical landmarks. It's probably little noisy when the weather is good, but we stayed during the rain, so it was very quite.

A beautiful 200 year old hotel - well renovated. The included breakfast was the best we had on our two week trip to Ireland. The location was great. The booking.com rate was fantastic. Our room was small, the beds were on rollers and it was hot with no ventilation. Avoid rooms between 325-328 - they are in an odd spot of the building and no breeze through the small window.

The owners are very nice and helpful, the breakfast was amazing. The rooms are very quiet. Walking Distance (about 15 min.) from Salt Hill village Center, with good restaurants and the unique bar "O Connors". There's a bus to Galway City centre every 30 Minutes, you reach the next bus stop in 3 min walking distance. We would definitely stay here again! :)

Comfortable if unspectacular hotel close enough to the city center with decor that feels pretty old fashioned. But everything was clean and the beds were very comfortable, but I would expect a bit more for the price I paid, although granted it may have been a bit higher because of the Christmas holidays. All in all a nice stay in Galway.
